How to Find GED Test Sites

There are numerous places where you can locate, register and take the GED test. Locating GED test sites is as simple as contacting your local department of adult education. In many cases your local school board can refer you to this office. GED is an acronym that officially stands for General Educational Development, although many people refer to it as the General Equivalency Diploma. When you hear someone say they are getting their GED this is what they mean, as this diploma is equivalent to a high school diploma.

Your local GED testing center may be situated in a neighbourhood community building or even held in a classroom. These exams are given to groups of test takers at the same time. You will have to find out the upcoming dates when the exam is offered, then register for the one you want. There is a minimal registration fee that varies depending on your location. Often the GED testing center is also home to GED classes for those who want to prepare for the test in a classroom setting with an instructor and other students. Whether or not GED school is right for you depends on your level of academic knowledge and your preferred learning style.

The GED test is divided and classified into sections. There is Language Arts Writing, Language Arts Reading, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. Within these categories different types of questions are asked. The questions are based on the knowledge of graduating high schoolers. In order to pass the test you must score better than 40 percent of these students. Scoring a 210 on each section is the minimum you will need to pass. To find out more about the test, the scoring and where to begin with this process contact the American Council on Education (ACE.)

After finding where GED test sites are, the next step is to make sure you get registered at your local site before the due date or you will have to wait for the next available test date. The exam usually takes 6 to 8 hours and test takers are given breaks. You are not notified right away whether you passed or not, usually the scores, transcripts and related information is mailed to you. If you do not pass the GED you can take it three more times in one year. The best way to ensure you do earn a passing score is to begin your studies as far ahead as you can and take practice tests to see where you need improvement.
