The GED exam was originally first introduced in 1942 for soldiers returning from war. They needed a way to complete education they may have missed while serving their country, so this exam was created. Today millions of adults have obtained their GED. The acronym officially stands for General Educational Development, however many people refer to it as a General Equivalency Diploma. In this article you will learn more about the testing process and GED test results.
The first step is to register for the exam. At the ACE or American Council on Education website you can locate testing centers in your area. You can also contact your local school board office or look in the Yellow Pages for an adult education center in your locality. There are registration deadlines so give yourself ample time. Also there will be a registration fee that can vary from approximately $20 to $80 depending on where you are. After registration make sure you have the date and time of the test marked on your calendar and get there on time or a little early.
The test is divided into five areas of assessment. Language Arts makes up two of the sections as it is divided into reading and writing. Then there is Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. In order to pass the test GED scores must be higher than 410 with a 450 average on the five sections. Your essay, which is part of the Language Arts section, must have a score of at least 2 points. Your GED test scores must equal or exceed the scores of 40 percent of graduating seniors in high school. In other words, test questions are things the majority of seniors ready to graduate would know.
You will not received your GED test results immediately as they may be mailed to you or informed through phone. It may be possible to receive your results online, just check with your test administrator. If you pass the exam you will be awarded a GED certificate. You should also make sure you get a copy of your test transcripts. If you do not pass the exam you can take it three times per year. It is recommended that every potential test taker study for the exam at an adult education center, distance learning course or at home using the Internet or textbooks.
