Choosing a Good GED Program

Taking the appropriate GED program can be the deciding factor for success or for failure. The acronym GED has several meanings, with the most common being General Educational Development and General Equivalency Diploma. The successful completion of this test rewards you with a diploma that is treated in the workplace and higher education world as a high school diploma. This type of diploma, whether high school or GED, is required for most all jobs and for every higher education institution. Luckily there are lots of GED programs that can teach you how to pass this test, even if you haven't been to high school for many years.


You can surely prepare and study for your GED in the comfort of your home. There are online study guides that can be very helpful and even free online practice exams. These free practice tests are not as comprehensive and certainly not identical to the official education GED test but they can give you an excellent introduction on what to expect. And, by taking practice tests that are scored you can see which academic areas you excel in and which you need extra help with. The good thing about online resources is that the scoring is often very fast and you can browse for information quickly and easily.

Moreover, there are also published books at the local library and authorized bookstore that can assist you to prepare. These volumes are usually very large. There are those that cover one aspect of the test such as math, then there are all-in-one books that tell you everything you need to know about the GED test from start to finish. Make sure you pick up the most recent guidebooks available and check with the American Council on Education to learn about up to date GED requirements. The more you learn the better prepared you will be when test day does arrive.

If you have preference for classroom learning, there are no cost and inexpensive GED program courses that you can take at your neighbourhood adult education center. These courses are usually held during evening hours and on weekends so attendance is convenient for working adults. At these education centers you can also complete the GED test application and register for the exam. Once you have done this you will receive information about test dates and times. The GED exam is rather lengthly so be prepared to devote most of your day to test taking.
