The Basics of the GED Exam

The General Educational Development exam or GED exam has a long history that traces back to World War II. In 1942, the test was first implemented to assist war veterans in completing their education and entering the workforce with a high school education. These days, you may also hear a GED diploma referred to as a General Equivalency Diploma because it is equal to graduating from high school. Today most every job (even unskilled labor) requires a high school education or the equivalent, which is the GED.

There is an enormous amount of GED information available online as well as published through books. The Internet can give you an excellent introduction to GED exams, especially if you visit the website of the American Council on Education (ACE) and explore the sections for GED test takers. This website tells you all about GED history, how the test is devised, how it is scored and much more. You will also find valuable study information in books at the library and bookstore. Most GED guides are huge and cover all the subjects on the test. They also usually contain a practice test so you can gauge your academic level and progress made.

Before sitting for the GED tests registration is required of you and the registration fee differs from state to state. Locate the nearest adult education center to find out about GED test dates, times and costs. The further in advance you prepare the better off you'll be. You may want to help prepare yourself for the exam by taking a class. GED preparatory classes are low-cost or free and held at times convenient for most working adults. They teach you the information necessary to pass the GED in a classroom setting, which for some is an effective learning strategy.

The GED exam is classified into five areas where you will be tested. Before you take GED tests you need to have a clear understanding of these sections. They are Language Arts (Writing,) Language Arts (Reading,) Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. To pass the test your combined score must be at least 2250 and each section must have a score of at least 410. The requirements for successful test completion are based on the scores of 40 percent of seniors in high school. An estimated 60 percent of graduating students meet or exceed GED scoring guidelines.
