The GED was first introduced in the early 1940s for war veterans who needed to finish their education and enter the working world. Today, the exam is for any adult who wants to finish their high school education as it is equivalent to a high school diploma.
The acronym GED stands for General Educational Development, but most people have reference as the General Equivalency Diploma. The test is broken up into five sections which are Language Arts Writing, Language Arts Reading, Science, Social Studies and Mathematics. In order to pass the GED test, you will need a score that meets or exceeds 40 percent of graduating high schoolers. This means an average of 250 on all sections and a minimum of 210 on each section. And, you will need at least two points on your essay which is part of the Language Arts writing section. The essay topic will be given to you at the time of the test, you will not be aware of it ahead of time.
Those institutions in higher education have provided GED classes that not only provide lessons on all the academic knowledge you need to attain, but also teach study strategies and how the GED test is being facilitated and administered. The GED test takes as long as eight hours although some students finish sooner. You must take the test at an official GED testing location. The test cannot be taken online, although there are practice tests online that can help you study and gauge your academic prowess. These tests are usually electronically scored which means you get to see right away how you did. Understanding your strengths and weaknesses is very important when preparing for a test of this magnitude.
To compliment with GED college classes in the conventional classroom environment there are also options for distance learning courses. Distance learning is done online and is usually done on your schedule, when you are able. This is convenient for working adults and those with families to care for. No matter how you study for your GED, it is an important task because a diploma can open up many new opportunities. You may able to obtain a better job, and you can continue your education at a community college or other higher learning facility.
